I found a third rail in the Presidential Race. Obesity is easy to ignore until you see the health care bill. No candidate running is will to talk to me or unveil a comprehensive plan to fight obesity. I talk to the campaigns and hear nothing back. I ask tough questions. There is massive reality gap between our ideals and reality. Does your highly marketed candidate have a detailed plan to fight obesity?
Medical problems like metabolic syndrome costs more than $400 a month. With 25% of Iowans obese the fiscal choices in Des Moines become matters of life and death. Choosing between your parents or children is not a choice. Nationally, obesity could one day consume up to a third of Bush’s tax cut. The single unavoidable worst thing driving up health costs is morbidity like obesity is coupled with an increase in longevity. Obesity is like rising water behind a dam. Nobody thin or fat escapes the cost of this epidemic. Nobody gave McDonalds and fast food companies the right to target Iowa’s kids. Public health efforts are outspent 5000 to 1. This issue puts our democracy in doubt. I don’t want to abridge free speech but we must defend common sense or motto on the Iowa’s flag means NOTHING!
